The Center for Lake Erie Education and Research (CLEER) provides visitors with interactive experiences and hands-on learning opportunities related to the rich biodiversity and ecosystems of not only Lake Erie, but the Great Lakes and the world’s freshwater resources at large.
If you are an educator or researcher, CLEER is your partner for your projects. For more information on how, click here.
With much of the space accessible and free to the public and library staff during regular library hours, the center will welcome visitors of all ages to explore on their own or as part of a visiting group.
CLEER will be home to educational and research opportunities, supporting educators, scientists and students in their efforts to study and protect the Great Lakes and share findings to help inspire the community to invigorate the Erie region’s blue economy.
NOAA Science On A Sphere®
NOAA’s Science On a Sphere® is a room-sized, global display system that projects visualizations onto a six-foot diameter sphere to help illustrate Earth System science to people of all ages.
This space will be an opportunity for educators and camps to incorporate this captivating display into their curriculum, as well as the public to engage in scheduled presentations and self-guided explorations, gaining insights into topics like oceanography, meteorology and geography through the stunning, spherical display.

Education and Research Lab
The Education and Research Lab component of the CLEER is designed to support both educational and scientific endeavors. This lab will provide equipment and an opportunity for students and researchers to engage in hands-on learning experiences, conduct experiments and projects that will directly impact and make significant contributions to the issues affecting Lake Erie and the Great Lakes. This lab will include:
- Flexible seating to allow for instructional or research needs
- Multiple sinks and wash stations
- Integrated storage
- Glass wall looking into NOAA Science On a Sphere®
- Equipment supporting water quality monitoring and research
Wet Lab
The wet lab in the CLEER will provide authorized personnel a specialized facility for conducting aquatic research and hands-on experiments, enabling detailed study of water quality, marine life and ecosystem dynamics. This lab creates a direct pathway for samples collected on Presque Isle Bay and the Lake to be processed almost immediately.
This lab includes:
- Separate, key-card entrance
- Physical separation for moisture
- Floor drains
- Separate storage for equipment needed in the lab
- Potential opportunity to showcase research being conducted on monitors to be displayed in the interactive exhibit part of the center in future.
