Department of Psychology and Counseling

Welcome to the Department of Psychology and Counseling at Gannon University.  Our department offers several options to tailor to your particular interest in the field, including two bachelor’s degrees, a master’s degree, two minors (a psychology minor and a counseling minor), specialized undergraduate tracks and a 4+2 track combining our undergraduate and graduate degrees into one accelerated program. Whether you are interested in a career as a researcher, a counselor, a neuroscientist or anything in between, our department can help you achieve your professional goals.

The Department of Psychology and Counseling offers opportunities for hands-on, practical experience through a variety of means. You might:

  • Gain field experience working in a psychological career through an internship.
  • Work as a research assistant with one of our faculty experts.
  • Conduct your own research study under the supervision of a faculty advisor.
  • Attend and present a project at a professional conference.

Undergraduate

Our undergraduate psychology programs offer both a Bachelor of Science (BS) and a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Psychology. The BS is structured toward students who are interested in furthering their education by obtaining master’s or doctoral degrees in research or science-based fields. Students in the BS program can expect to gain advanced training in research methods and statistics, including a required research practicum in collaboration with a faculty member. Students interested in health care fields can also combine their BS degree with the curated Pre-Medical and Pre-Physical Therapy tracks offered as part of their coursework.

The BA is a degree tailored to students interested in helping professions or in combining a Psychology degree with an additional emphasis in a complimentary academic area, such as business, criminal justice or social work.  The BA program includes a required internship, in which students gain on-site work experience to better prepare them for their eventual careers. BA students can also expect more flexibility in the psychology courses they choose to take as well as the electives they pair with the degree.

Exceptional students with an interest in counseling may also take advantage of the department’s 4+2 program, which combines the BA with the department’s CACREP accredited Master of Science in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. In this accelerated program, students are put on a fast track to a master’s degree, allowing them to earn their MS and enter the workforce up to a year earlier than they otherwise would.
