Clinical Experiences

Students participate in four full-time clinical experiences (40 total weeks), integrated throughout the curriculum.

Many clinical sites require a clean criminal record; students with a criminal record may be limited in the clinical sites available to them.

The Co-Directors of Clinical Education track each student's placements, select sites, and advise students to help ensure a diverse range of clinical exposure.

Overview

Gannon University's Morosky College of Health Professions and Sciences physical therapy program utilizes a curriculum organized around body systems. Full-time clinical experiences are integrated into the academic program to support immediate application of didactic and occur at points where students are ready to practice and refine the assessment process and skills they've learned.

The recommended emphasis of each clinical experience is detailed below as a guideline for students to consider when selecting their experiences. Site availability at certain times of year requires some flexibility on the student's part.

  • The first full-time clinical experience (10 weeks) takes place in the first year immediately following completion of the students' study of the musculoskeletal system. This experience provides students with an opportunity to apply knowledge and skills for individuals with musculoskeletal movement system dysfunction.
  • The second full-time clinical experience (10 weeks) takes place following the second year of didactic material. Students are assigned to facilities where they work with individuals with neuromuscular, cardiovascular and pulmonary, integumentary, and other movement system dysfunctions.
  • The third full-time clinical experience (8 weeks) This is the first of two terminal clinical experiences. The third full-time clinical experience occurs in the fall of the third year following completion of all didactic coursework. This terminal experience is designed to advance clinical reasoning, patient management, professionalism, and progression toward entry-level practice through exposure to diverse patient populations, practice settings, and healthcare teams. Students may also have opportunities to explore areas of interest or specialty practice.
  • The final twelve-week clinical experience (12 weeks) This is the final terminal clinical experience. The fourth full-time clinical experience occurs in the spring of the third year following successful completion of Clinical Experience 3 and all didactic coursework. This terminal clinical experience is designed to support continued progression toward entry-level practice through exposure to diverse patient populations, practice settings, and healthcare teams., while also providing opportunities to explore areas of interest or specialty practice.
