A small drone, that does not fly in the sky but floats on water, is making a big impact on the waters of Presque Isle Bay and beyond.

Gannon University's Project NePTWNE is the first location in Pennsylvania to join the , a binational initiative working to remove plastic and other litter from the Great Lakes while understanding how that waste enters waterways in the first place.

Through its partnership with the , 名媛直播 is using a Pixie Drone — a remotely operated watercraft designed to collect floating debris — to remove trash from Presque Isle Bay. The Council of the Great Lakes Region serves as the U.S. organizer for the initiative, which began in Canada through the University of Toronto in 2019 before expanding to the United States in 2020.

Under the partnership, Project NePTWNE will conduct 20 trash-collection events by mid-October. The weight of the material collected will be recorded during every collection, while six collections will include a detailed analysis of the debris to identify the types of waste being removed.

That data will help members of Project NePTWNE estimate the amount and types of litter collected throughout the project, providing a clearer picture of what is making its way into the waterways.

But the project is about more than cleanup.

“Getting trash out of our waterways is priority number one, but cleanup is only part of the solution,” said Dr. Sherri Mason, Ph.D., director of Project NePTWNE. “By studying what we collect, we can better understand the types of waste entering the lake, where it may be coming from and what we can do to prevent it from getting there in the first place. This project gives us an opportunity to combine hands-on action with data that can help educate our community and inform broader solutions to protect the the largest freshwater ecosystem.”

The information gathered through the project can help educate the community about the impact of everyday behaviors and support conversations about policies and practices on land that could reduce the amount of plastic and other debris entering waterways.

The Great Lakes Plastic Cleanup provides participating locations with Pixie Drones for waterways and BeBots for beaches through funding from Meijer and other supporters.
