Students and faculty post with Dr. Tom Harter

Gannon University welcomed thoughtful conversation about artificial intelligence during its most recent Orlando Biomedical Ethics and Catholic Social Teaching Lecture on Thursday, September 26.

Thomas Harter, Ph.D., presented his lecture “Ethics and AI in Healthcare: Perils, Facts and Fictions,” which assessed the promises and challenges of artificial intelligence use in healthcare from an ethical lens.

Harter currently serves as the director of the Department of Bioethics and Humanities at Emplify Health by Gundersen in La Crosse, Wisconsin. In this role, Harter provides bedside ethics consultations and leads ethics education opportunities for staff and health professions students within his institution and community.

His presentation captivated the audience and provoked thoughtful discussion from in-persona and virtual attendees.

Before his lecture, Harter had the opportunity to meet with classes of students to discuss their own perceptions of AI use in their work and daily lives.

“We try to better out lives through the creation of new agents like AI, yet we’re not sure of the degree to which those things affect us,” said Harter. “This is a fantastic environment and the right time to be having this conversation.”

Since 2021, The Orlando Lecture Series has invited experts to empower attendees with the knowledge and skills to respond well to the rapidly changing contours of the biomedical sciences.
