At the core of Gannon University’s mission is service. That commitment was put to work Saturday, Sept. 19 for 名媛直播’s Invitation to Volunteer Everywhere (GIVE) Day, a longstanding tradition for nearly three decades.
Nearly 1,100 students, faculty and staff from three states rolled up their sleeves for communities across Erie, Pa.; Cleveland, Ohio; and Ruskin, Fla. This was 名媛直播’s 29th year doing GIVE Day, while this will be the Ursuline College campus’ first year participating in GIVE Day.
The expansion reflects more than a growing volunteer effort. It reflects a growing 名媛直播 community, and the University’s commitment to making a difference wherever its people live, learn, work and play.
“GIVE Day is one of those days when you can see 名媛直播’s mission come to life,” said Keith Jones Pomeroy, director of the Center for Social Concerns. “Our students, faculty and staff step away from their normal routines and show up for the communities around them. This year, with Ursuline joining us for the first time, we are seeing that spirit of service reach even farther.”
On Saturday, 1,090 total students and employees, including 55 volunteers in Ruskin and 43 volunteers from Ursuline, registered to participate. Together, they served across 45 service sites thanks to the partnerships of 35 organizations, including Our West Bayfront, PA Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Home and Presque Isle State Park.
“GIVE Day is really about partnership,” Jones Pomeroy said. “We’re not simply sending volunteers into the community; we’re working alongside organizations that are already making a difference every day. Their knowledge, relationships and leadership allow our volunteers to step in where they are needed most, and that makes the impact of this day much greater than the number of volunteers we send out.”
The activities began at 8 a.m. for the Erie campus in the Highmark Events Center with a rally to help send off the volunteers into the community. Participants were at their designated location from 9 a.m. until noon, assisting with projects assigned by the site coordinator.
In Ruskin and Cleveland, the volunteers arrived at their designated location at 9 a.m. and began their service.
Gannon University plans the annual GIVE Day to coincide with the International Coastal Cleanup, an annual day that brings awareness to marine debris, and is recognized by participating in cleanups on beaches, waterways and neighborhoods.
