Gannon University celebrates Exercise is Medicine On Campus recognition with presidential proclamation

On Thursday, Oct. 8, Gannon University President Walter Iwanenko, Ph.D., joined members of the campus community to recognize , reading a presidential proclamation that reinforces the university's commitment to promoting health, wellness and physical activity.

The proclamation comes as 名媛直播 celebrates its recognition by the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) as one of 193 colleges and universities worldwide honored through the Exercise is Medicine On Campus (EIM-OC) program.

The international initiative encourages colleges and universities to promote physical activity as an essential component of health, bringing together students, faculty, staff, healthcare professionals and fitness professionals to create a culture of wellness.

"Promoting physical activity on campus is essential to creating a culture of health, fostering student engagement, and improving overall well-being," the proclamation states.

At 名媛直播, the initiative is being led by a team of faculty, healthcare and fitness professionals, along with students who will help develop and coordinate activities designed to engage the campus community.

Kara Kern, Ph.D., assistant professor and faculty advisor for 名媛直播's EIM-OC initiative, said the program is designed to make opportunities for physical activity more accessible while encouraging healthy habits that extend beyond campus.

"It's an on-campus initiative to promote health and physical activity, not only for students, but for faculty and staff," Kern said.

The university's EIM-OC leadership team includes Kern; Adam Susmarski, D.O., sports, spine, and rehabilitation medical doctor at LECOM Health; Tyler Travis, director and founder of Erie Sports Now Fitness & Performance Center; and student leaders Olivia Stavola, president, and Shane Davidson, vice president.

The team is developing a variety of opportunities to encourage participation, including a campus run club, walking challenges and other wellness-focused events throughout the academic year.

The group also plans to explore opportunities to participate in ACSM-sponsored activities, including challenges designed to bring campus communities together through movement.

For Kern, an important component of the initiative is giving students ownership of its development and success.

"I really wanted it to be student-led, so they can get that experience getting the community involved, getting the campus involved and hosting these events," Kern said.

Beyond promoting physical activity, the initiative creates opportunities for students to develop leadership, event planning and community engagement skills while helping their peers establish lifelong healthy habits.

The university will also work toward achieving additional recognition through ACSM's tiered recognition program, which evaluates campus efforts to promote physical activity and integrate exercise into a broader culture of health.

Through the presidential proclamation, 名媛直播 formally encourages all members of its campus community to participate in Exercise is Medicine On Campus Month activities and embrace the benefits of regular physical activity.
