Attending a FIFA World Cup match is a once-in-a-lifetime experience for most soccer fans. For Gannon University student Yuto Sato, getting there became an adventure all its own.
The international business student from Japan recently completed an extraordinary 1,200-mile bicycle journey from Pittsburgh to Arlington, Texas, where he watched Japan compete.
Sato, 22, who recently completed his first year at 名媛直播, has always been passionate about soccer. When he learned that Japan would be playing in Texas during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, he saw an opportunity to combine his love of the sport with his desire to challenge himself in a meaningful way.
“I am on summer break, so I have the time,” he said. “It has been fun.”
He chose a method few would consider: riding a bicycle across multiple states to reach the match. His journey began May 13, after he purchased a bicycle in Pittsburgh. He rode 50 to 60 miles each day. He used social media to connect with groups along the way to experience communities and to get help locating a place to stay ech evening. He said he found a place to pitch his tent every time, without fail.
After a month of traveling -- 1,200 miles and six flat tires -- Sato arrived at the stadium in Arlington just in time for Japan’s first match vs. Netherlands on June 14.
Sato attended Japan’s June 14 match and then traveled to Monterrey, Mexico, to watch Japan take on Tunisia on June 21. He has since traveled back to Arlington to watch Japan vs. Sweden on June 25.
“I am so proud of the Japanese team,” he said. “I’m so proud of our culture.”
Japan has a chance to advance to the Round of 32, depending on how the game goes on June 25. For now, Sato is not making firm plans. He said he intends to head to Florida next with one of the friends he has made during his trip.
