A common misconception is urban college campuses lack green space for students to utilize. Gannon University refutes that statement with access to AJs Way, Friendship Green and eventually, a Tiny Forest.

The Tiny Forest is a new initiative, which will be planted near the 名媛直播 Greenhouse on the corner of West Third and Myrtle Streets, with 名媛直播’s Project NePTWNE and Lake Erie Arboretum at Frontier Park (LEAF). The mission of this project is to protect biodiversity and utilize unused urban space for reforestation.

Tiny Forests are an area of densely planted tree saplings, which establish and grow up to 10 times faster than standalone trees, emulating the bene铿乼s of an old growth forest in a fraction of the time.

This project will also allow 名媛直播 students and faculty research opportunities throughout the maturity of the Tiny Forst. The Tiny Forest will need to be weeded and monitored for up to three years, however, after the initial years, the Tiny Forest is then considered established and will allow for what is called “labor-free research.”

“Planting a Tiny Forest at the site of the greenhouse with our partners at LEAF is a natural extension of Project NePTWNE’s mission to create a more sustainable and resilient Great Lakes ecosystem,” said Sherri Mason, Ph.D., “This initiative brings together education, environmental stewardship and community collaboration—all core pillars of NePTWNE—to transform a small urban space into a thriving hub for biodiversity, learning and climate action.”

The Tiny Forest will occur in four stages: preliminary, planning, planting and care. Organizers are currently in the planning stage with the goal of planting between 500 to 2,000 native trees this fall. This Tiny Forest will be the third in Northwestern Pennsylvania.
